Who We Were vs Who We Are

Paul begins by reminding believers to be subject to authorities, to be obedient, to do what is good, and to show gentleness toward everyone. Then he reminds them of who they once were.

Before God's transforming work, we were characterized by disobedience, foolishness, deception, and slavery to our own desires. We struggled with envy, malice, and hatred.

But Paul is reminding us of our past for a purpose—not to shame us, but to show us how far God's grace has brought us.

Who you were: Lost, disobedient, deceived, controlled by sinful desires, and separated from God's ways.

Who you are becoming: Obedient to God, compassionate toward others, self-controlled, gentle, and committed to doing good.
