Weeds In Our Garden: Depression
Mar 8, 2026 • Seth Hankee
In First Kings 19, the prophet Elijah becomes overwhelmed with fear and despair after being threatened by Jezebel. Exhausted, he flees into the wilderness and asks God to take his life. Instead of rebuking him, God cares for Elijah by giving him rest, food, and gentle encouragement, eventually speaking to him in a quiet whisper and reminding him that he is not alone.
This passage shows that even faithful people in the Bible experienced deep discouragement. Many followers of God battle depression and despair, and these struggles are not portrayed as sin. Elijah’s story reminds us that God meets us in our lowest moments with compassion. He loves us and desires to bring healing, hope, and renewal to our lives.
