Our Story

In 1952 Pastor John Martin, along with a few other families, was commissioned by Springdale Mennonite Church, Stuarts Draft, to begin an outreach in the Greenville/Stuarts Draft area. Initially, East Bethel, a vacant Presbyterian church building, was rented and used for Bible school, Sunday school and worship and evangelistic services.  In 1957 a new church building was erected on the current location and dedicated for God’s glory.  The name Greenmonte was selected because it is in close proximity to Greenville and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Pastor John Martin and his son, Roy Martin, who was ordained deacon and then pastor in 1960, laid the foundation for Greenmonte to be a Christ-centered fellowship of believers who reach out into the community with the love of Jesus Christ and extend a welcoming spirit to everyone.  The story has been told through the generations of how Pastor John Martin would travel through the community to meet the neighbors and share fresh eggs with them, believing that the inward spirit of a person is more important than outward

appearances.

Today we still hold those same foundational values, reflected in various socio-economic, ethnic and denominational backgrounds of our Greenmonte family.  We enjoy the blessings that come from being an intergenerational church family.  With our roots planted firmly in our Anabaptist heritage, we are excited about continuing to be a family that reaches out with Christ’s love in fresh, new ways to welcome everyone to consider the life-transforming power of Jesus Christ.
